Francis Allard receives the Rydberg Gold Medal
Professor Francis Allard has been honored with the Rydberg Gold Medal 2020 in recognition for outstanding contributions to the research of ventilation and room air distribution. Due to the coronapandemic the award was given on REHVA General Assembly on Monday April 19th, 2021.
Professor Allard is now emeritus professor at La Rochelle University in France. After a first part of his career as staff scientist at CNRS (National Scientific Research Center) at INSA de Lyon (1982-1992), he was nominated full professor in the board of creation of La Rochelle University in October 1992. He has created LEPTAB (Laboratory of Transfer Phenomena Applied to Buildings) in 1993, now LaSIE (Laboratory of Engineering Sciences for the Environment) and was the first director of the Civil Engineering Department (1993-1997). Director of LEPTAB from 1993 to 2011, F. Allard has been also Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology (1997-2002) and vice rector for research of La Rochelle University (2008-2012). In 2011, he created Tipee (Technology Innovation Platform for Environmental Efficiency) as a Startup of La Rochelle University which is today an independent company he is chairing. His main domain of expertise is heat and mass transfer phenomena with application in energy efficiency and indoor environment in buildings and urban microclimate. He has published more than 250 articles in international journals, international conferences, and books. In recent years, he was member of various editorial boards of leading international journals in his domain (Building & Environment, Energy & Building, Int. Journal of Building Performance Simulation, Building Simulation Int. Journal, Int. Journal of Ventilation).
During the last decade, F. Allard was also member of various scientific committees, for example ANR défi6 (National Agency for Research, Sustainable Cities and Buildings program), Observatoire de la Qualité de l’Air Intérieur (French National Observatory of Indoor Air Quality), Fondation Bâtiment Energie (Building Energy Foundation), HCSP (High Committee of Public Health), INRS (National Research Institute for Public Health), CoNRS (National Committee of Scientific Research), CSTB (Scientific and Technical Building Center).
The Rydberg Gold Medal is a recognition for outstanding contributions to the research on or the development of ventilation and room air distribution. The medal is typically awarded every second year by SCANVAC. The gold medal is named after Professor John Rydberg (1908 – 1986) in order to honor his international pioneer work with room air distribution at Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan in the middle of the nineteen-hundreds.
